Romans 3 unfolds like a tense courtroom drama with an unexpected and captivating plot twist.
The first section lays out our clear and unmistakable guilt in vivid terms.
The second section reveals that though guilty we will not suffer the penalty of our guilt if we place our faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.
This is possible because as we’ve already established, the living God wants to connect with us.
Romans 3:21-31 spells out what God did to make that connection through His one and unique son, our Lord Jesus Christ.
Through Christ, God has provided a perfect permanent right standing before Him.
Through Christ God has promised to give this perfect righteousness to anyone who believes in the finished work of Christ.
Through Christ, God has provided a perfect permanent right standing before Him. vs. 21. But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify.
God’s law revealed the standard to achieve a perfect moral standing in His sight, such that anyone who obtained a right standing by keeping the law would be spared from God’s judgment and welcomed into His presence. Passages like Psalm 15 proclaimed this righteousness.
In proclaiming God’s righteousness, however, God’s word also highlighted the many ways we’ve broken God’s law and earned His judgment.
For the law not only speak to our actions, but dives deeper into the ways we’ve thought, spoken, and even the intentions of our heart.
Our Lord Jesus Christ however kept God’s law perfectly, not failing in a single point of it. He, therefore, earned a perfect, permanent right standing before His Father. Christ is the righteousness of God that’s been revealed to all humanity.
Through Christ God has promised to give this perfect righteousness to anyone who believes in the finished work of His one and unique Son. vss. 22-24. This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.
God gives Christ’s perfect, permanent right standing to anyone who realizes their need for it and believes in Jesus Christ. To believe in this context is to count as absolutely true.
We have deliberately broken God’s law and are subject to His judgment.

But now, God has flipped the script and provided the ultimate plot twist.
He freely justifies those who believe by freely giving us the perfect, permanent right standing Christ earned while giving Christ the judgment He didn’t deserve.
